Hemp, Electric Buses: Fawad Chaudhry highlights upcoming projects in Pakistan

Federal Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry has said that Potohar region is suitable for the cultivation of hemp and the government will now cultivate the cannabis itself.

In a press conference, Fawad Chaudhry said that the Ministry of Science and Technology has changed its face in one year and has largely met the priorities set at the outset.

He said that efforts are being made to make Islamabad the first city where all public transport is electric, two companies have started a $50 million project of electric buses, under which 120 electric buses will be imported this year. He informed that they would also introduce electric bikes for women.

Fawad Chaudhry said that from the next year electric buses will be assembled in Pakistan, and in the period of 10 years the country will be able to generate renewable energy to produce electricity and eill also be able to manufacture its own electric batteries.

“Yesterday we got a license to use hemp plants for industrial purposes. Pakistan has a history of cannabis in Afghanistan,” he said.

He said that a 2016 research revealed that the effects of the element present in cannabis play an important role for patients with severe pain. “China is now cultivating cannabis on 40,000 acres, Canada on 100,000 acres,” he said.

The Federal Minister said that hemp plant also produces fiber which is useful for the textile industry. He said that hemp plant would be able to meet its needs when the production of cotton was reduced.

Fawad Chaudhry said that at present the government will set up more research and safeguard on cannabis production, this plant will be produced by the government itself.

The Minister for Science and Technology said that we are trying to enter the multi-billion dollar CBD market in the next three years.

He said that the climate of Potohar area is conducive for the production of hemp, which will be used in the production of medicines.
